Recorded Lyrics

verse

It's in the evening
and everything's all right
Pistol-packin' mama, don't you tell me dirty lies
for I'll be sleeping
underground tonight
and the starlight and the moon will shine without my oversight...

chorus

Wasting away, spilling time from a bottle
Keeping one hand up on the wheel and one hand on the throttle
Wasting the day, spilling time from a bottle
Watching all of our dreams like the stars going out one by one.

verse

I've got no time now
for things I can't abide
and trying to escape yourself requires a long long ride
so grab a barstool
to keep yourself afloat
If the weather in my head gets out, you'll need your overcoat

playout (sung somewhat incoherently)

when time comes around and I go back to ground
will it be that there still is something left for me
will you look my way at the end of the day
was there anything more I could be

History

  • 2007-07-26: words originally written (with music in my head) on page 99 of the notebook with the green duct-tape over the spine; see below.
  • 2013-02-09 recorded demo backing tracks and am waiting for the house to be quiet so I can do the vocals
  • 2013-05-26 Some vocals recorded; not 100% happy with them, and I need to add more, but it may be enough for a demo mix soon. Also added acoustic guitar, which could also be better.

Original Lyrics

wait till the evening
when everything's all right
pistol-packin' mama don't you tell me dirty lies
for I'll be sleeping
underground tonight
and the starlight and the moon will shine without my oversight
wasting away, pouring time from a bottle
keeping one hand up on the wheel and one on the throttle
racing the day, spilling time from a bottle
watching all of our dreams like the stars going out one by one
no explanation
required by policy
the information is all written down for all the world to see
so grab a barstool
to keep yourself afloat
if you still hear me rambling on, please grab your overcoat

Alternate Chorus

Yesterday's gone, and there is no tomorrow
Drowning all of our hopes and our dreams in the tears of our sorrow

Other Notes

Songs this reminds me of (musically):

  • The World's Address (general feel/rhythm)
  • The Masochism Tango
  • Café on the Left Bank (guitar riff) - I had this written down in the notebook, but now I don't see the similarity
  • Brother of Mine (verse)
  • Besame Mucho (chorus)
